How common is cardiovascular disease?

Image: heart in a world globe
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 17.5 million people around the globe died of cardiovascular disease in 2005. This makes cardiovascular disease the leading cause of death, responsible for approximately 30% of all deaths globally – more than infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and maternal or perinatal conditions combined. What’s more, the global incidence of cardiovascular disease is expected to increase based on current trends.
