What causes cardiovascular disease?

There are several potential causes of cardiovascular disease. However the main cause is a buildup of fatty plaques in the arteries. Healthy arteries are both strong and flexible, and are responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. The buildup of fatty plaques can put too much pressure on the arteries, causing them to become thick and stiff. This hardening of the arterial walls – a process known as atherosclerosis – can restrict blood flow to organs and tissues of the body.
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is also a major risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure typically has a slow progression over many years. Most people won’t show signs and symptoms of their high blood pressure at first. The great danger is that you usually can't tell you have high blood pressure! Your doctor, however, can quickly and easily measure your blood pressure. Once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.
