Lisbon, 2009: 4th Annual Pritor®/Kinzal® Stand Alone Symposium

(May, 2009) The 4th Annual Pritor®/Kinzal® Stand Alone Symposium took place in Lisbon, Portugal on May 9, 2009. The aim of the stand alone was to present the results of the ONTARGET® Trial Programme and encourage active discussion on its clinical implications.
Despite advances in the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD), it remains the leading cause of death worldwide and a leading cause of disability. It also places a heavy burden on the patient and the community. Clinical trials that challenge current standards and open new potentials in management are therefore of great interest.

From the first presentation of the landmark ONTARGET® trial results at the American College of Cardiology congress in Chicago, March 2008, a stream of trial results and publications have been released that demonstrate Pritor®/Kinzal®’s capacity to lead a change in hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) management. Indeed, with outcome data from over 50,000 patients, Pritor®/Kinzal® has one of the largest evidence based data ever established for an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB).

The symposium, chaired by Prof. Giuseppe Mancia and Prof. João Morais, opened discussing the role of the renin-angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS), its link with hypertension, CV and renal complications and the growing role of ARBs. Prof. Morais provided an overview of the PROTECTION® program, highlighting the recently released meta-analysis results of PRISMA™ I & II (Prospective, Randomised Investigation of the Safety & efficacy of telMisartan versus ramipril using ABPM).
Dr. Peter Meredith commenced the plenary session with the results of the ONTARGET® trial, concluding that the results of ONTARGET® provide evidence that telmisartan is effective and well tolerated in patients with high CV risk, with a higher tolerability than ramipril. This was followed by Prof. Alejandro de la Sierra & Prof. Walter Van Mieghem presenting the results on TRANSCEND® and PRoFESS™ respectively. Additional presentations were given by Profs. Georg Noll, Ulrich Kintscher and Athanase Benetos.

Throughout the symposium, active discussion was encouraged within the panel and with the audience on topics including renal outcomes, heart failure and the interpretation of morbi-mortality trials.
