The European Commission has approved the label extension of Pritor
®/Kinzalmono
® (telmisartan). The new indication in cardiovascular prevention includes the reduction of cardiovascular morbidity in patients:
- with manifest atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease (history of coronary heart disease, stroke, or peripheral arterial disease) or
- type 2 diabetes mellitus with documented target organ damage.
Telmisartan is the only angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that has been given a positive recommendation for this indication demonstrating proven cardiovascular in such a broad range of CV risk patients.
The CHMP opinion follows a review of the results from the ONTARGET
® clinical trial, involving 25,620 patients, which confirmed Pritor
®/Kinzalmono
® as the only ARB with proven cardiovascular protective effects in a broad cross section of patients at CV risk. Pritor
®/Kinzalmono
® was also associated with substantially higher treatment compliance, even in a patient population selected to tolerate ACE inhibitors.
